On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Describe how information science, information management and knowledge management evolved;
2. Identify the main roles of information professionals;
3. Identify the social and political contexts within which information and library services operate;
4. Discuss some economic and social implications of information technology;
5. Describe the types of recorded information available, and how different information formats operate;
6. Demonstrate awareness of the range and diversity of information services that exist.
The aim of this module is to give students an introduction to the meaning and foundations of the information profession by investigating the varied roles of the information professional, and why these are important in today'r rapidly changing world. It also aims to place information studies in its societal and historical context by looking at the various forms and formats of recorded information, the major producers and providers of information in the UK, and the social and political environments in which they operate.
