On completion of this module, students should be able to:

Brief description

The student is placed in a working situation that will broaden or extend their professional experience and/or exploit a special interest. The placement provides a 'raboratory? where ideas and concepts introduced in the classroom can be observed in a working environment. The student will also experience a wide range of practical activities and will have the opportunity to use skills introduced in their course and to lay the foundation of new skills. Students will also have the opportunity to observe the value and influence of professional attitudes. For many it will be their first introduction to the practicing profession and will therefore have an important role in motivating them and developing their understanding of the responsibility of the information professional.

Aims

The aims of the module are:

Offers students an opportunity to gain experience of working in a library, information unit or related environment
Provides students with a link between their formal studies and the world of the working professional that will enhance students? understanding of the theories in information studies and their relationship to professional practice
Provides students with a detailed insight of some of the career paths that may be available to them when they have graduated
Meets one of the requirements stipulated by CILIP ? the professional accreditation body

Personal Development and Career planning	A central aim of this module is to develop an awareness of each student?s career needs.
Subject Specific Skills	* Independent project work: a project report on the workplacement organisation and an oral presentation on work experience * Writing in an academic context * Oral discussion and presentation: oral presentation incl. answering questions * Self-management: assignments require self-management skills
Team work	During the work placement students will be expected to be an integral part of the staff of the host organisation. This could well involve working on tasks as part of a team.
