Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module students will have an improved understanding of the rise of the regional issue in Western Europe. They will be aware of common trends as well as differences in the territorial politics of the major West European states. Students should be able to show that they are familiar with developments in particular countries as well as with pan-European trends, in particular in relation to the integration process. They should be able to demonstrate an awareness of the complex inter-relationship between domestic territorial politics, European integration and processes of global economic change.

Brief description

This module provides an in-depth and critical examination of territorial politics of an integrating Europe and a globalising economy. The module will look in detail at the changing political and economic positions of regions in Europe. Individual sessions will be dedicated to the discussion of developments in France, Spain, Italy, Germany and the UK. This includes the study of demands for change coming from the regional level, reform policies pursued by national and European institutions and the impact of global economic change. In considering the role of regions in the European Union, the module will also look at theoretical approaches to regional development and multi-level governance.
