Supplementary Assessment	Resit opportunities for this module will be available in the Supplementary examination period each year. Normally, Masters students are required to resit those elements of the module that they have not already passed. The Department always writes to all students well before the supplementary examination period to confirm the requirements.

Brief description

This module aims to provide students with an understanding of international and comparative perspectives on peace-building, including new directions in policy and practice. The module examines the feasibility and value in comparative analysis; using case studies of Northern Ireland, South Africa and Spain and the Basque country, students will extrapolate the implications of any lessons or conclusions to the Israel/Palestine situation.

What is peace? Peace processes as transition from violence to constitutional conflict
The significance of territorial sovereignty, land disputes and internal segregation
Non-state actors, their roles during and after conflict
The role of state violence, the rule of law and governance in peacetime
The effects of war: militarization, cultures of violence, and achieving cultural shifts
Gender and age dynamics in conflict
The role of political parties during the peace settlements
Reconciliation of societal divisions: cultures, identities, aspirations, antipathies and difference
