Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, a student should have developed:
1. the ability to obtain knowledge independently, using library, computing network and internet resources;
2. the ability to initiate short investigations, formulate appropriate problems and solve them;
3. the ability to present a detailed word-processed report on the work carried out.

Brief description

This module is intended to help a student pursue mathematical or statistical investigations working as independently as possible of direct instruction, and to report coherently on his/her investigations. The area of mathematics investigated will beof the student's own choice. The particular topic will be chosen in consultation with a supervisor whom the student will see for at most one hour per week. The main purpose of these tutorials is to ensure that progress on the project has not been impeded by difficulties or misunderstandings and to make such suggestions as seem appropriate.

This module is not available for M Math students, in view of the substantial amount of project work required of them in their fourth year.

Students intending to take this module in 2008/2009 must consult Mr D A Jones prior to registration to determine whether a suitable scheme of study and supervisor can be arranged.

Aims

To provide an opportunity for independent study of a topic in Mathematics or Statistics not covered at all, or in sufficient depth, by other modules.

Content

The topic and detailed resource material will be arranged in consultation with the supervisor.
