Learning Outcomes

On completion of the module, students should:

1. Have developed an understanding of the relationship between location, agricultural practices and the rural economy

2. Have developed a critical, evaluative and analytical approach towards agriculture and the rural economy

3. Be able to appreciate the complexity of decision-making in the diversification of rural Britain.

Content

Students will visit a county/region within the UK on a study tour, describe its geographical, social and economic features, visit farms and businesses related to farming, describe these and relate them to the area in which they are located.

The approach throughout should be analytical, critical and evaluative and contain a thorough review of appropriate literature .

The report will be fully referenced in accordance with the Harvard System.

Aims

This module gives students the opportunity to develop an appreciation of the interrelationship between farm, rural business, landscape and the community and the importance both of integration and diversification within the rural areas of Britain.

Transferable skills

.1 Independent project work
This entire project will develop students' ability to work independently.

.2 IT and information handling
It is expected that the project will be prepared using a word processor.

.4 Writing in an academic context
This skill is an integral feature of the assessment of project.

.7 Self management
Students will be expected to manage their own time in meeting the submission deadline.
