Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to.
Understand major psychological, physical and social consequences of physical inactivity
Demonstrate a basic knowledge of key theories and concepts in exercise psychology (such as exercise adherence, goal setting, motivation, stages of change, quality of life, social cohesion, exercise dependence and eating disorders)
Identify basic strategies that may be used to enhance adherence to physical activity and exercise.
Examine the influence of physical activity on psychological well-being
Communicate information orally
Content
The content involved in the module can be categorised as adherence related and well-being related. Part of the module focus on the theories and strategies that can be used to increase adherence to physical activity, such as stages of change, goal setting, contracting, the development of exercise enjoyment and social cohesion etc. The other major part of the module focuses on an introduction to the psychological outcomes of physical activity. Themes include concepts such as quality of life, mood, self-perceptions, anxiety, body image, exercise dependence and eating disorders.
