Working on location in different sites within the local area and its surrounds, you will create site specific artworks both individually and in groups. The course is run over many months giving you the opportunity to respond the seasons. This course will include lectures, seminars and you will be required to produce documentation as well as visual and oral presentations of your work. In order to participate fully on this course will need to be physically fit and have the stamina to work on location all day.
This module is also a School of Art Elective, amlgamating two Land Art courses. It is designed to produce artwork in relation to the natural environment through both group activities and self-generated projects. By focusing on specific environments students will develop in their aesthetic and conceptual responses, their understanding of place and the qualities of natural materials. The module aims to develop awareness of the discipline within a range of contextual discourses: contemporary art since 1950; the wider historical perspective of artistic response to nature and landscape; recent political/social/scientific developments in understanding of the environment. Topics will cover:- Defining Landscape: an introduction to landscape theory and debates; Art and the Environment- a survey of the rise of Land Art and current practice; American and British Practitioners from Smithson to Richard Long; Mapping the Landscape: debate and discussion focusing on experiencing, recording and documenting the landscape.
This course is open to Lifelong Learning students as well as students from the School of Art.
