Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

  • To develop group working by allocating topics at an early stage so that groups of students may work on them togehter.
  • To encourage participation by menas of beginning a themaytic debate about whether industrial relations has been radically
  • transformed via human resource management or whether present conditions are merely a swing of the pendulum in labour- management relations.
  • To develop a critical appreciation of the costs and advantages of globalisation and the power of the transnational company.

Aims

This module builds on the foundations established by module MM32010 by extending the discussion and inquiry to international level. This is done by way of a genuinely comparative analysis ie rather than country-by country studies, a programme of industrial relations topics and themes, in each of which comparisons of national practices and policies may be made. The module also encourages and develops an interest in the employment management problems and practices of managers in other countries in order to better understand similar issues in the UK and also to consider whether such practices could be transplanted into management in the UK. The module is designed to be more accessible to the growing numbers of overseas students of Business and Economics and to be open to their suggestions for further development.
