Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the epidemiological and pathophysiological evidence which underpins current guidelines for the inclusion of physical activity in the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle;

Demonstrate an awareness of pre-assessment screening, risk stratification and issues related to the selection of safe and appropriate physiological assessment protocols for both healthy individuals and those suffering from chronic disease;

Interpret and evaluate data from physiological assessment protocols and demonstrate an awareness of validity and reliability issues;

Brief description

The module will cover generic aspects of physiological assessment for both healthy individuals and those presenting with a range of chronic medical conditions including pre-assessment screening, risk stratification, assessment protocols and interpretation of assessment data. In addition, students will study the epidemiological evidence for the promotion of physical activity and the pathophysiological basis of a selection of medical conditions and the effect of physical activity on the disease process.

Content

Epidemiology and the relationship between health/disease and physical activity;
Health benefits of physical activity in the healthy population, including recommendations;
Pre-assessment screening and risk stratification;
Health-related physical fitness assessment;
Clinical assessment of those with chronic disease;
Pathophysiological basis of a range of chronic diseases: eg. Coronary Heart Disease (CHD);
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD); Osteoporosis; Diabetes Mellitus; Asthma;
Obesity; Hypertension; Elderly; Pregnant.
