Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Research and summarize current topics of interest to their degree.

2. Present and debate their summaries orally in a seminar format.

3. Produce a 500 word article designed to communicate the subject to a general audience.

4. Produce a webpage and podcast.

Brief description

The module will provide students with the opportunity to research topics of current interest which are relevant to their degree. The topics are presented in the format of a seminar and a magazine article, and a second topic in the format of a webpage with and embedded 5 minute radio broadcast/podcast.

Content

The module comprises 8 x 2 hr sessions devoted to the presentation of individual seminars. Students are briefed about the required presentation skills at the start of the Semester. A seminar timetable is drawn up, and students are expected to electronically submit their PowerPoint presentations before the start of the seminar series. Appropriate feedback is provided after the seminar has been delivered. Each seminar should last for approximately 15 minutes, after which general discussion takes place. All students are expected to attend and to contribute fully to the discussion of each topic. Before the final session of the Semester, the webpage and embedded podcast must go live.
