Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Evaluate and discuss in detail advances in biosciences.

2. Investigate in detail a specific research topic related to their area of specialism and effectively communicate findings.

Brief description

The scope of this module is intentionally broad so that it can take full advantage of ongoing research of the University and its visitors. The module will have a series of lectures on advances in biosciences. These lectures will be delivered by leading research scientists within their field and will draw on the presentations of scientists working in Aberystwyth University plus external specialists at conferences. Following this, students will be required to present seminars on a topic relating to advances in Biosciences within their specific field.

Content

A series of lectures plus student seminars

The aim of this module is:

To give students an understanding of the developments in methodologies and techniques that have, and are currently, transforming biosciences with particular reference to the student's area of study.

It will achieve this by the following:

A series of lectures given by Aberystwyth University or external specialists and relating to their current research, this may include attendance at external conferences/colloquia. These will be on issues of direct relevance to biosciences and by selection students can tailor the content towards their area of study. The emphasis will be on novel, up and coming research.

Students will also be required to present seminars on a topic relating to the field of advances in biosciences as it applies to their particular interests.

The content of this module is intentionally broad in order to allow full advantage to be taken of visiting lecturers and up and coming in house research and expertise and relevant conferences.

Module Skills

Skills Type Skills details
Application of Number
Communication Students will be expected to be able to express themselves appropriately in their seminar and written examination context.
Improving own Learning and Performance Detailed feedback will be given on seminar presentations.
Information Technology Students will be required to source information from a variety of scientific publication data bases. Students will be expected to deliver their seminar with the aid of power point and to produce their accompanying summary on word processor, containing written text and illustration.
Personal Development and Career planning Students will have some choice in the area which is covered by their seminar, as such this will allow them to begin to specialize in areas of specific interest linked to their future career plans.
Problem solving
Research skills Students will be required to undergo directed self study and so will develop their literature research skills.
Subject Specific Skills New areas of research related to the student's subject area.
