Semester Assessment Portfolio Part 1  A 2000 word portfolio which will contain assessments on various study skills discussed in the lectures and seminars. This will be submitted in 2 parts - Part 1 (planning essays, referencing, paraphrasing and plagiarism, development of search skills)   35%
Semester Assessment Portfolio Part 2  A 2000 word portfolio which will contain assessments on various study skills discussed in the lectures and seminars. This will be submitted in 2 parts - Part 2 (critical reading, evaluation of sources, reflective practice)  50%
Semester Exam 6 Hours   Oral Presentation  Oral presentation on personal learning (5 minutes)  15%
Supplementary Assessment Supplementary Portfolio Part 1  Students will need to resubmit the failed portfolio parts, with corrections made throughout Part 1   35%
Supplementary Assessment Supplementary Portfolio Part 2  Students will need to resubmit the failed portfolio parts, with corrections made throughout Part 2 (those who fail part 2 will need to submit a new reflective piece of writing to reflect the development of skills developed in study skills over the year)   50%
Supplementary Exam 6 Hours   Supplementary Oral Presentation  Oral presentation on personal learning (5 minutes) (subject must differ from first oral)  15%

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Identify ways of improving personal learning

Develop and critically evaluate the study skills required to study at a higher education level.

Give a short verbal presentation

Demonstrate a critical engagement with relevant source material

Brief description

This course will introduce a range of skills, from writing essays to time management, from finding the right information to contributing to a class discussion. By learning appropriate techniques and methods, other modules will be easier to approach with confidence.

Aims

Lectures will be based on the following:
1. Reflecting on your own learning and effective time management
2. Referencing, bibliography and plagiarism
3. Academic writing
4. Using the internet for information/ search skills
5. Effective note taking
6. Effective Reading Skills
7. Critical Thinking 1
8. Critical Thinking 2
9. Preparing for and giving verbal presentations
10. Preparing for examinations

Seminars will be based on the following:
1. Referencing
2. Academic Writing + Paraphrasing
3. Searching the Internet for sources
4. Critical Thinking
5. Oral Presentations
