Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Describe the physiology of exercise and training

2. Investigate the selection and training of the equine athlete

3. Recognise how the equine athlete can compete safely under differing conditions

Brief description

This module will provide an understanding of exercise physiology and the effects of exercise and training upon specific body systems and ultimately in the successful management of the performance horse. It will also focus on the design of appropriate fitness regimes with due regard for the adaptive responses required by different activities. The module will also address criteria for selecting equine athletes. An introduction to common injuries and causes of poor performance will also be studied

Content

The module will cover selection of equine athletes, the principles of training and the effects of exercise, training and fatigue on specific body systems as well as causes of poor performance. A variety of practicals may be included, for example, determining fitness of different horses using recovery heart rates, and/or dissection of selected organs to evaluate anatomy and physiology from an exercise perspective.
