Critically evaluate and synthesise research and theory within exercise and health psychology.

Make informed judgements about the professional and practical application of exercise and health psychology research.

Aims

The role of psychological factors in optimising and managing health and in determining the adoption, maintenance and effects of exercise is now well established and well documented. These include: relationships between exercise and mental and physical health and well-being, in both clinical and non-clinical populations; psychological factors that will deter or encourage an individual to exercise, such as self-perception, and, psychological frameworks and interventions that can be employed to manage and modify exercise and health related behaviours. An understanding of the role of key psychological factors through exposure to contemporary research that addresses these topics is therefore critical for exercise and health scientists. The purpose of this module is to provide students with critical understanding of key contemporary theoretical frameworks and research in exercise and health psychology.
