This module introduces you to core concepts of art history & foundational research skills, through the lens of the history of landscape in Western art.

In seminars, you will learn how to think like an art historian. In lectures, we will examine the invention and development of the 'landscape' genre, and explore artistic approaches to the environment from its origins to the present day. We will examine a range of artistic media (painting, photography, cartography and land art) and a variety of historical contexts. You will use the lecture content to practice applying core concepts and research skills to concrete examples.

Cynnwys

Lectures form a chronological survey of the invention and development of 'landscape' in Western art and visual culture. They start with representations of nature in medieval & Renaissance art, and the invention of 'landscape' as a discrete genre in the sixteenth century. Following lectures examine pivotal episodes in the history of landscape: these will vary depending on the latest discoveries in the field and the current research of teaching staff, but as an indicative list will include topics such as the seventeenth-century Low Countries, Romanticism, Impressionism, Modernism, and Contemporary art.

Seminars focus on core concepts of art history & foundational research skills. These will include: definition, description and visual analysis, classification and comparison, research and context, academic writing, referencing & citation.
