This module examines how identity is constructed and represented through photographic practice. Building on the core principles established in Year 1, ‘Photography: Advanced Darkroom and Digital Practice’ (AR25120 & AR25240) extends students’ technical skills and understanding through a range of advanced analogue and digital processes.

Focusing on the core theme of identity, this module explores portraiture as the main area of inquiry. Through hands-on workshops and engaging historical and contemporary case studies, students are supported in exploring the theme within their own practice, fostering both conceptual development and photographic vision.

This module intends to further develop your creative vision through photographic practice. You will explore advanced techniques in film photography, including medium format cameras and darkroom printing. Students will gain hands-on experience in the lighting studio, participating in demonstrations and workshops to understand lighting principles. Additionally, you will enhance your digital photography skills, including both advanced scanning and editing techniques. This module also introduces the ethical considerations in photography, using case studies to illustrate key concepts.

AR25240 is taught concurrently with AR25120. Student taking AR25240 are required to produce an additional body of work on a set theme.

This module is delivered through practical workshops, demonstrations, and lectures that focus on advanced technical skills and inspiring photographic examples. Group and individual tutorials provide constructive feedback from peers and staff, assisting students in refining their work. By the conclusion of the module, students will have developed a physical and digital portfolio that showcases a developed photographic vision through an informed selection of images in addition to a technical proficiency in photography.
