Site Specific Exhibition

1. Develop a site-specific artwork from its original concept through structured research, experimentation, material development and installation, engaging in dialogue with tutor and peers
2. Produce a guided body of research that includes sketchbooks, written and visual material clearly demonstrating a line of enquiry responding to Aberystwyth Arts Centre and its contexts
3. Demonstrate developing independence, sustained working and coherent resolution of site-responsive ideas to prescribed exhibition deadlines
4. Employ techniques and materials imaginatively under guidance in relation to site, audience and institutional context, with attention to process, installation and basic curatorial practice
5. Situate their art practice within contemporary and historical traditions of site-specific art, communicating those ideas through tutorials, group tutorials and presentations
6. Collaborate effectively within a group to contribute to a coherent public exhibition, demonstrating awareness of basic curatorial strategies, visitor experience and event organisation
7. Be mindful of the limitations and creative potential of site-specific media and approaches, including safety considerations and audience engagement

This module enables you to explore site-specific art through the guided practical and conceptual development of artworks responding directly to a local cultural venue, such as the Art Centre.

With dedicated time, resources, and tutor support, you’ll develop a self-directed project in response to this site, integrating skills from your elective modules across media and disciplines. Each phase is facilitated in negotiation with your tutor, from conceptualisation and research to material experimentation and technical refinement.

Collaborating as a cohort, you’ll produce a public group presentation of your site-specific projects, working together on all aspects of exhibition development, from production and installation to marketing and interpretation, building foundational skills in curating and event organisation.

The module emphasises contextual research, inventive material experimentation and curatorial thinking to develop awareness of how site, audience, and institutional context shape artistic production and modes of display.

This module promotes self-directed study and focuses upon the conceptual and practical aspects of site-specific art and introduces curatorial practice in response to the context of Aberystwyth Art Centre, for example. Specifically in this module, students will develop an experimental approach to site-responsive artworks, through structured research into the venue, material testing and group collaboration frameworks.

Site Specific Exhibition provides the opportunity for students to build upon experience gained from AR25320 during Level 2, although they are not required to have taken this in order to choose this module. The module provides one pathway in Fine Art and is specifically intended as preparation for AR32540 Exhibition: Graduation Show

This module is delivered through site visits, workshops, and seminars that explore site-specific art concepts and curatorial strategies, such as those at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre. Group tutorials and supportive peer critiques, facilitated by the tutor, provide feedback on developing artworks and exhibition plans. By the end of the module, students will have created and installed site-responsive artworks in a collaboratively curated public exhibition and produced individual digital portfolios that document their research and development, material experimentation and critical reflections on site, collaboration, and audience engagement.
