Wedi cwblhau'r modiwl dylai'r myfyrwyr fedru:
- Perform calculations to determine amounts and concentrations of substances.
- Describe bonding in small molecules and in biological polymers.
- Explain the differences between plant, animal and bacterial cells.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of basic cell structure, cell organelles and their function.
- Explain cell growth and division.
- Outline the causes, spread and treatment of a variety of diseases.
- Outline the impact of scientific research on science and/or society.
Disgrifiad cryno
The module comprises a series of lectures together with associated lab practical sessions and workshops, which will provide foundation year students with skills, confidence and knowledge for further study in the biosciences. The content of this module has been designed to introduce the biochemical building blocks and cell structure of a range of organisms.
Cynnwys
The module will begin with a consideration of the chemical and biochemical building blocks of life. Viruses and bacteria are discussed before moving on to a consideration of eukaryotic cells. The lecture material is supplemented with workshops and lab practicals to support and reinforce learning.
