  1. 1. Apply a working knowledge and understanding in describing and discussing a range of language approaches and methods
  2. 2. Demonstrate a critical understanding of key pedagogical concepts and practices in English language teaching
  3. 3. Plan appropriately in accordance with standard practices in TESOL.
  4. 4. Critically review published and other materials for teaching purposes
  5. 5. Choose and apply appropriate material, technologies and resources for particular purposes and distinct groups of learners.

Disgrifiad cryno

TESOL Materials Development and Application of Technologies will familiarize students with popular coursebooks, and other published and online materials in TESOL. They will gain skills in how to review and critique published and other materials and technologies and resources for teaching purposes. Students will have an opportunity to design, adapt and develop materials and resources for teaching distinct groups of TESOL learners. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of key concepts and ideas in TESOL as well as learning about critical approaches in the field and language learning from the socio-cultural tradition.

Cynnwys

Issues and principles in materials design in TESOL. Survey of materials and resources in mainstream TESOL practice. Introduction to well-known TESOL websites. Website review activity.

Coursebooks in TESOL, old and new. The communicative approach in modern coursebooks. Identifying the target learner in coursebooks.

The 4 skills and grammar and vocabulary in coursebooks. Sequencing and grading. Adaptation of a coursebook exercise for different levels/different profiles of learners.

Coursebook review (Team presentation). Authentic materials and language in use. Selection and adaptation. Authentic tasks.

Working through a modern coursebook unit. Supplementing, adapting or replacing with authentic/self-developed materials for particular learner profiles. Presenting language in authentic texts.

Modern technologies in TESOL. Some case studies. Review of their use and teaching/learning approaches embedded within.

Language learning softwares and apps and learner independence. Learner choice. Themes, topics and vocabulary. Learner generated materials.

Critical approaches to materials design in TESOL. Representation in published materials - of the learner’s culture or the target culture? Marginalised voices in TESOL.

TESOL technologies in the socio-cultural tradition. Some case studies of online and distance learning using social media.

Teaching with minimum materials. A demonstration with Cuisenaire rods. Further study and careers in TESOL and materials design.

Cyfathrebu Students are required to work together as a team to create and deliver a team- assessed presentation.
Datblygu personol a chynllunio gyrfa Students will be encouraged to reflect on their professional and academic performance through tutor feedback on their assessed work.
Datrys Problemau Many of the learning activities in the seminars are informed by a guided discovery approach. Students therefore will be involved in individual or collaborative problem solving. Regarding the materials project, students are presented with a problem of how to design and use materials for two distinct types of learner.
