Canlyniadau Dysgu

Wedi cwblhau'r modiwl dylai'r myfyrwyr fedru:

  1. Use vectors, vector fields, vector calculus and different co-ordinate systems to analyse physical problems in 3-dimensional space.
  2. Evaluate line, surface and volume integrals. Recall and apply the Stokes', Green's and divergence theorems.
  3. Explain and calculate convected rates of change.
  4. Calculate the vorticity of an ideal fluid flow.
  5. Determine whether a flow is suitable for an incompressible fluid.
  6. Apply and solve the equations governing the flow of an ideal fluid in specific situations.
  7. Determine the streamfunction and velocity potential describing a given velocity field.

Disgrifiad cryno

This module introduces tools in vector calculus and applies them to develop the basic concepts of Classical Hydrodynamics, providing a framework for a modern appreciation of Fluid Mechanics.

Nod

To provide the basic framework for a modern appreciation of Fluid Dynamics.
To introduce tools in vector analysis and the basic concepts of Classical Hydrodynamics.
To explain how mathematical modelling of fluid motion can help in the understanding of certain real world phenomena in applications such as meteorology and aerodynamics

Cynnwys

1. 2D and 3D scalar and vector fields in Cartesian and polar co-ordinates.
2. Vector Calculus: gradient, divergence and curl of vector fields.
3. Line and surface integrals, the divergence theorem.
4. Velocity, pressure, viscosity, density and the Reynolds number.
5. Eulerian and Lagrangian reference systems; acceleration and the convective derivative.
6. Kinematics of fluid motion: Pathlines, streamlines, vorticity.
7. Basic equations governing fluid motion: Incompressibility and Euler's equations.
