Edward Davies

Edward DaviesEdward Davies was the only son and heir of David Davies 'Top Sawyer' (1818-1890) of Llandinam: entrepreneur, industrialist, Liberal MP for Cardiganshire and a founder member of The University College of Wales, Aberystwyth.

Edward (1852–1898) inherited the responsibilities of the huge fortune his father had made developing railways, sinking coal mines and dock-building. The weight of responsibility administering the family businesses and the Ocean Coal Company at a time when all was not well in the collieries played heavily upon Edward's fragile disposition and he suffered a mental breakdown — he died shortly afterwards at the early age of forty-five. The empire passed to his children Gwendoline Elizabeth (1882–1944), Margaret Sidney (1884–1963) and David, the first Lord Davies, who lived with their step-mother Elizabeth (née Jones d.1942).
