Language Skills Certificate
The Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol has developed a Welsh-language Skills Certificate in order to enable students and others to provide evidence of their practical Welsh-language skills and to give them an advantage in the world of work.
All students and staff at Aberystwyth University can study for this qualification free of charge, and the Certificate will prove your ability to work through the medium of Welsh when looking for a job or when developing your career. Many employers in a wide range of fields, in both the public and private sectors, acknowledge the importance of the Tystysgrif Sgiliau Iaith.
Since its introduction in 2013 the Certificate has become widely recognised, with hundreds studying for the qualification every year across Wales. Here at Aberystwyth University we are keen to ensure that as many of you as possible are given the opportunity to study for the Certificate so that you will be able to compete with your peers and be given an additional boost in the jobs market.
What is the aim of the Certificate?
The Certificate aims to establish a standard, recognised way of showcasing students’ linguistic skills, enabling them to provide evidence to employers of their ability to communicate confidently and professionally through the medium of Welsh, both oral and written.
What do I need to do and what support is available?
In order to gain the Certificate, students must undertake two assessments: a short oral presentation and a written exam. Informal preparatory sessions are held throughout the academic year and one-to-one support will also be available by the Certificate tutor. Attending the sessions is a great opportunity to ensure that you prepare thoroughly so that you can do your best in the assessments. The sessions will also be useful to support other studies through the medium of Welsh. The provision aims to be as flexible as possible, so that you can attend the sessions alongside your degree studies or job.
