PhD Thesis (working title): Living the Dream? A geography of lifestyle migration to rural Wales, 1965-1980

My thesis focuses on the experiences of those who moved to Wales during the 1960s and 1970s. I draw on primary data collected through oral interviews with the migrants themselves, and am building the thesis around the narratives these people shared with me. The main themes to emerge so far are the idea of moving as a reaction against cultural change / political chaos, and concepts of home, belonging and identity, as the migrants wrestle with being foreigners in Wales.

Other Activities

I am a postgraduate representative for the Centre for Welsh Politics and Society (CWPS), and a postgraduate fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.

As well as my research in DGES I also undertake teaching with the Department of History and Welsh History, where I focus on modern history (post 1945) and heritage studies. Modules I am involved with include:

• HY12320: History for Life
• HY20220: Interpreting the contemporary heritage of the British Isles

My research interests include:

• the history of sustainable / alternative lifestyles
• heritage (in particular heritage values, intangible heritage, and heritage interpretation)
• the use of stories and oral testimony as research sources
• interdisciplinary research methods
