The Red Box Project at Aberystwyth University

The Red Box Project is a community-based, not-for-profit initiative, which aims to support young people throughout their periods by providing red boxes filled with free period products to schools and colleges.

The Story

The Red Box Project was founded in March 2017 by three friends who wanted to give young people in their local area access to sanitary products. After reading about ‘Period Poverty‘ in the news, they were angered at the idea that young people were missing out on their education because they couldn’t afford the products they needed during their period.

They decided to take action and contacted several secondary schools in Portsmouth to ask if a constantly stocked box of menstrual products would be welcomed. The feedback from teachers was that the issue was real and the resource was needed.

Since then, the project has expanded and gained a nationwide status, operating across the whole of the UK with each project being run by passionate volunteers.

Now the time has come for us to implement the project, and as far as we are aware, we are the first university in Wales to do so.

A big thank you to the Facilities Team for making the project happen!

FAQ.2

Why are there red boxes in all bathrooms and not just the ladies ones?

The university believes that menstrual products should be available to anyone who requires them regardless of gender identity or financial means.

FAQ.3

Why are there red boxes in only some of the buildings on Penglais Campus and not all?

The current scheme is a trial at this stage for three months in the first instance and with red boxes only in selected buildings. We will be monitoring the popularity of the scheme during this three month period and then will make a decision as to whether we extend the scheme for a longer period of time, and expand the scheme by putting the boxes in other buildings on Penglais Campus.

FAQ.4

Who will ensure that the red boxes are adequately replenished and that the additional disposal units are regularly emptied ?

The Red Boxes and the disposal units will be monitored by our cleaning and portering staff as a part of their normal shift.

FAQ.5

I have a comment and/or a question regarding the Red Box project, who can I contact?

Please contact Ruth Fowler, Equalities and Communications Officer on ruf@aber.ac.uk
