The summer months at a University are perceived by many to be a quiet period. That is not so for an Estates Department. They are in fact one of the busiest times in our calendar, when the majority of our construction projects take place. Even though there are no full time students on Campus there are still many part time students, staff and Conference Office visitors to name a few. This results in a lot of planning and coordinating of works. This year the project team are currently busy managing improvements to disabled access to a few buildings which includes additional disabled parking bays, complete redecoration of the Computer Science department's building which includes the replacement of numerous fire doors and replacement flooring, improvements to the Sports Centre facilities and a complete rewire of the Theatre within the Arts Centre which includes new seating, carpets and decoration. This is in addition to specifiying and procuring in readiness for the major capital works planned in the upcoming months and minor projects in all buildings.
As the UK, and Ceredigion in particular, has been experiencing a prolonged and unusual hot spell the maintenance team have been taking advantage and concentrating on exterior works which cannot usually be planned in our rainy climate! This has been particularly fortunate with the summer season of Open Days about to commence. They have been busy carrying out landscape works, pressure washing and painting step edges, window cleaning and installing decking for example.
We really hope that our prospective students enjoy the experience and the sunshine.
