Your new Primo: Library Catalogue search

Ready for the new academic year, the Library has launched its new and improved Primo: Library Catalogue search experience. This offers improved discovery and access to the University’s wealth of online and print resources.

Searching

The default ‘Libraries” search provides a more focussed search of the collection of online and print resources subscribed to by the Library. This includes physical items in the libraries: books, journals, newspapers as well as e-books, e-journals and other electronic information sources to which AU subscribes.

Switch to the ‘Everything” option to combine both the “Libraries” content as well as other available e-content to vastly increase the number of search results returned. This search allows you to identify the material you need down to individual article level.

 Libraries (the default search) finds

    • physical items in campus libraries: books, journals, newspapers, pamphlets, DVDs,
    • e-books, e-journals and other electronic information sources to which AU subscribes (searches for ebook/ejournal titles not individual chapters/articles within).
  • Articles searches across many journal articles from participating publishers and returns results with full-text online.
  • Everything combines both the “Libraries” content as well as other available e-content to vastly increase the number of search results returned. This search allows you to identify the material you need down to individual article level.
  • Aberystwyth Research Portal searches across AU staff and postgraduate research openly available online, including published outputs, postgraduate theses.
  • WHELF Search returns search results from WHELF library catalogues.

Refining your search

Along with a cleaner look and feel, additional functionality has been added to streamline your searching experience. You can now use a range of new filters underneath the search box to refine your search. Filter by item type (all items, books, journals or audio visual), and by author/keyword (by author, title keyword, classmark, subject keyword, description keyword, ISBN/ISSN) to give yourself the best chance of finding the resources you need.

Sign in to request items

Sign in to get complete results and to request items. If a book that you would like to borrow is out on loan to someone else, just sign in and request the book to receive it within a week. Keep checking your emails and/or “My Library Account” for notifications of when the book has been returned for you to borrow.

Saving and exporting items from your search

If you have saved items on your E-Shelf in the previous Library catalogue version, these will move across to the new version and can be found under Saved items in “My Account”. These saved items will no longer be in folders but will be tagged with the folder names you have used.

In addition to the host of new options, the new Primo: Library Catalogue search has retained a number of core elements from the previous catalogue. You are still able to export citations to EndNote, create static links to your found item, and cite the item (in a choice of citation styles).
