The British landscape results from its underlying physical geology, being moulded by subsequent geomorphological and biological activities. Superimposed upon this are the changes brought about by human activities. Britain'r landscapes will continue to change, so this important resource needs managing. To do this effectively entails a large number of skills, and understanding of the wide range of issues affecting the countryside, and the available legislation to protect it. This course will examine the role and effectiveness of the present legislation, National Parks, AONBs, Heritage Coasts, SSSIs and the Geological Conservation Review, World Heritage Sites and Landscapes of Outstanding Historic Interest, as well as the usefulness of projects such as Landmap (Landscape Assessment and Decision Making Process). Study visits will be made to the Ceredigion uplands and Roman and Post Industrial remains in Gwynedd.
