Aberystwyth University’s Department of Mathematics has scored an excellent rating of 92% for overall satisfaction in the 2016 National Student Survey (NSS).‌

Students rated the programme highly for the quality of teaching, assessment and feedback and learning resources, all scoring over 90%. The Department’s score is part of a wider success story at Aberystwyth University which is rated the best in Wales and one of the top ten higher education institutions in the UK for overall student satisfaction, according to the NSS.

The results show that overall satisfaction amongst students at Aberystwyth University stands at 92% - that’s six percentage points higher than the UK figure of 86%.

Professor Simon Cox, Head of Mathematics at Aberystwyth University, said: “Mathematics has been taught here since the University opened its doors to students in 1872. The department is now based in an award-winning centrally-located building overlooking the sea with new lecture theatres and a dedicated library. Our committed staff are here to engage with students and help them to do well. They have worked hard at ensuring that students receive detailed comments on their work and are given feedback which helps their understanding and allows them to excel.

“This dedication is reflected in the results of the latest National Student Survey with high scores of 92% satisfaction for the Department as a whole as well as for Assessment and Feedback. Further, our mathematics degrees are accredited by the IMA, we have a vibrant student maths society, and there are frequent meetings of our student-staff liaison committee. In short, we have everything you would expect of a modern, world-leading university in a beautiful part of the country.”

The National Student Survey (NSS) collects data from 155 of the UK’s Higher Education Institutions and is recognised as an influential source of information for prospective students when considering their options.
