Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, a student should be able to:
1. explain, orally and in writing, basic topics in Mathematics introduced or developed in the other Ordinary degree Mathematical modules;
2. identify the techniques needed to solve problems associated with the other Ordinary degree Mathematical modules and provide solutions of these problems;
3. take part in the solution of a problems in groups followed by group presentations of the results.

Brief description

The module consists of a weekly tutorial, throughout both semesters, at which (i) coursework set on topics dealt with in other Ordinary degree Mathematical modules is discussed, (ii) students make individual or group presentations of set pieces of coursework, (iii) students are required to work, individually or in groups, on set problems and (iv) difficulties arising in other Ordinary degree Mathematical modules are discussed and resolved.

Aims

The aims of this module are to (i) increase awareness in the technical skills associated with basic Mathematics, (ii) develop analytical skills, (iii) develop an appreciation of the need for precision and proof and (iv) increase confidence in understanding and solving Mathematical problems. The module pursues these aims by providing support for the other Mathematical modules studied by Ordinary degree students.
