Topics will introduce non tourism specialists to issues in management of tourism including:
The tourism system
Hospitality and event operations
Travel and transport
Destination management
Quality management in tourism
Customer relations and service delivery in tourism
Sustainability and CSR in tourism
Risk and crisis management in tourism
Networking, Collaboration and Leadership for tourism
Trends in tourism

Brief description

The purpose of this module is to provide students unfamiliar with the tourism industry an insight into the diverse issues regarding its management. The module will examine the tourism industry through a systems approach in order to highlight impacts and planning concerns. The module will also examine contemporary issues in tourism management, for example service delivery, risk management and sustainability. A wide range of global case studies will provide examples.

Communication The seminars will require students to read specific journal articles, to make a presentation on the academic content of such material and to engage in debate on the subject matter with fellow students. Listening, questioning, debating and presentation skills will be assessed in this way and written feedback given at the end of the module.
Improving own Learning and Performance
Information Technology Preparing the seminars will require students to use the Library's online catalogue as well as internet literature sources. Assessment will also need to be word processed to a high standard. Both aspects will be assessed and feedback given.
Personal Development and Career planning The module will introduce students to various career pathways in tourism.
Problem solving The issues paper will be based around a management issue and potential solutions
Research skills Students will be required to research information for their issues paper
Subject Specific Skills The written assignment will be based on a real-world problem and involve the application of marketing skills to solve it
