Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Demonstrate awareness and understanding of the applications of motion analysis in biomechanics.

Collect motion data independently, showing awareness of limitations and taking steps to minimize errors.

Analyse motion data, providing quantitative descriptions of body kinematics in complex movements.

Interpret kinematic data to describe the salient features of motion.

Critically examine relevant literature to formulate a research question.

Communicate the findings of research to a wide audience.

Brief description

This module will equip the student with advanced skills in the capture and analysis of human motion that will be applicable in a range of research and clinical settings. The module will go beyond the video analysis typically studied at undergraduate level to develop skills in automated capture of 3D motion, analysis and interpretation of complex movements, and communication and application of results.

Content

Indicative content includes:

Types of investigation using motion analysis.
Types of systems for 3D motion capture and how they work.
Sources of error, minimisation of noise and filtering methods.
3D kinematics and methods of description such as Euler angles.
Definition of marker sets for 3D motion analysis.
Applications of motion analysis related to health and clinical settings, e.g.:
Gait analysis (e.g. older adults, cerebral palsy in children)
Upper limb motion analysis and measurement of scapulo-humeral rhythm.

Aims

Motion analysis is a very widely used technique in sport, exercise and health-related contexts for analyzing and understanding human movement. This module will allow the student to develop skills in using motion analysis that will be invaluable in a wide range of research and applied settings.
