Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Demonstrate a critical understanding of the philosophy of science and of different approaches to scientific enquiry.
Understand how to design and conduct research, and analyse a range of data, in line with appropriate guiding scientific principles.
Brief description
Practitioners and scientists in exercise and health domains are required to understand how to design, conduct, and analyse research in line with the appropriate guiding scientific principles. The research scientist must be aware of which approach (e.g., positivism or interpretive) is best suited within a specific context and how to employ data analyses in line with the chosen approach. This module will discuss the philosophy of science, in particular, positivist and interpretive approaches to scientific inquiry. Fundamental knowledge obtained during undergraduate study will be developed and challenged, and students will develop an advanced understanding and appreciation of the relevance of these approaches within Exercise and Health Research.
Aims
The principals of research design and analysis underpin the understanding and application of Exercise and Health Research, and as such are fundamental to effective work in these areas. The module will introduce students to quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection and analysis. Critically, the module will equip students with the skills, knowledge, and competencies needed to design and complete their independent research project
