Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Identify the components of animal production systems.
2. Review and evaluate scientific literature and apply results to the development of animal production systems.
3. Explain how science can be applied to the improvement of farm animal reproduction, lactation and growth
and development.
4. Discuss ethical and social issues related to the application of animal sciences.
Brief description
This module explores the way in which research is used to develop more efficient animal production systems. Lectures and seminars will cover a range of topical subjects selected from reproductive technologies, manipulation of lactation and fertility, meat science, animal nutrition and genetic improvement.
Content
- Artificial insemination and embryo transfer
- Dairy cattle production systems including:
- Manipulation of milk quality
- Management of mastitis in the dairy cow
- Metabolic disease
- Management of cows in the transitional period
- Meat production systems including:
- Feeding strategies for beef cattle sheep and pigs
- Control strategies for intestinal parasites
- Meat science with reference to the factors that influence meat eating quality
