Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of a range of discursive modes
2. Explore a range of writing practices based on these modes and on pre-existing textual material
3. Produce their own writing and reflect critically upon it
4. Improve their work in response to criticism
Aims
This is a core module for students of English and Creative Writing, and an option module for other creative writing students. This revision reduces it from 30 to 20 credits, in line with modules offered by other departments at this level. It also aims to give the module a clearer focus, by structuring workshops around modes of discourse rather a range of writing practices, as previously. The practices will still be taught, but students will receive a clearer understanding of their effectiveness by using them throughout the module on a common set of texts.
Brief description
This module aims to enable students to explore a range of writing practices, while developing their understanding of different modes of discourse. It also aims to develop students' ability to produce and present their own writing and their reflections on writing. The module will run in parallel with the first, research-based part of the Writing Project, offering students a chance to experiment with writing techniques before the creative part of the Writing Project in the second semester.
Content
Week 1. Journalese: news and features in broadsheet and tabloid style.
Week 2. Letters and diaries.
Week 3. Lists and catechisms (question-and-answer format).
Week 4. Melodrama and romance.
Week 5. Verse and doggerel.
Week 6. Cookery and food-writing.
Week 7. Political and official.
Week 8. Children’s writing.
Week 9. Adventure and exploration.
Week 10. Business and commercial writing
They will be encouraged to experiment with this material using some of the following techniques:
• Parody, pastiche and imitation
• Cut-ups and defacing
• De-centring and re-centring
• Metafictional framing.
They will also be encouraged to invent and treat new material of their own in the same mode.
