Applied Veterinary Nursing

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Discuss the need for continued personal and professional development and propose short-, medium-, and long-term goals with an emphasis on development of leadership skills.
2. Discuss the responsibilities identified in the RCVS Code of Professional Conduct for Veterinary Nurses in preparation for professional registration.
3. Critique the impact of delegation on the student and registered veterinary nurse and the wider veterinary team.
4. Discuss examples of ethical and legal dilemmas and reflect on specific cases experienced in the workplace.
5. Demonstrate competency in the RCVS Day One Skills and Day One Competences through Objective Structure Clinical Examination (OSCE).
6. Demonstrate competency in the RCVS Day One Skills and Day One Competences through the completion of the Nursing Progress Log (NPL).

The aim of this module is to offer the student opportunities to develop competency in practical skills and nursing interventions in a simulated clinical setting. Practical skills that have been demonstrated whilst on placement will be further developed in taught sessions and self-directed learning opportunities. Following completion of 1800 hours of placement and the nursing progress log (NPL) whilst in a registered training practice, reflection of the professional responsibilities of the veterinary nurse in line with the RCVS Code of Professional Conduct for veterinary nurses will also consider delegation and ethical and legal dilemmas experienced in veterinary practice. The development of a personal and professional development plan will help identify areas for future continued professional development once on the RCVS register.

1. Analysis of a range of samples obtained including urine, faeces, blood and hair
2. Positioning and set up of diagnostic techniques e.g. radiography and ultrasound
3. Set up and maintenance of anaesthetic equipment
4. Preparation and delivery of fluid therapy and nutrition
5. Administration, dispensing and handling of medications
6. Scrub and circulating nurse requirements
7. Preparation and handling of equipment for surgery
8. Communication e.g. admit, discharge, nurse consultations
9. First aid and triage
10. Wound care and bandaging
11. Physical examination and patient care
12. Place IV, sample collection
