Physics Department is a force to be reckoned with in influential survey

The Department of Physics at Aberystwyth University has been given a stellar rating of 95% for overall satisfaction in an influential UK-wide student survey.

The Department’s undergraduate degree course also got a gold star with its Astrophysics course given a 100% overall satisfaction rating in the 2016 National Student Survey (NSS).

The Physics Department’s achievements are part of a wider success story at Aberystwyth University which is rated the best in Wales and one of the top ten higher education institutions in the UK for overall student satisfaction in this year’s NSS.

The results show that overall satisfaction amongst students at Aberystwyth University stands at 92% - that’s six percentage points higher than the UK figure of 86%.

Dr Andy Evans, Head of Physics at Aberystwyth University, said: “We have built again on last year’s improvements and the results show that the Department is going from strength to strength. There is a close working relationship between staff and students here which is good for both learning and teaching.

“We also develop external partnerships in order to equip students with employability skills and our Year in Industry programme offers excellent opportunities to gain experience of the commercial world. We are introducing new Engineering Physics courses to add to our excellent Physics and Astronomy courses, and it’s great to see our Astrophysics course getting top marks for student satisfaction.”

The National Student Survey (NSS) collects data from 158 of the UK’s Higher Education Institutions and is recognised as an influential source of information for prospective students when considering their options.

If you’re interested in studying at Aberystwyth University’s Physics Department and finding out why our students are so satisfied with their courses, it’s not too late. We still have some clearing places left for the 2016-17 academic year or come along and visit during one of our Open Days.

The NSS figures follow closely on the heels of the latest employability figures for UK universities which showed that 92% of Aberystwyth graduates were in work or further study six months after leaving university.

The National Student Survey is carried out annually by IPSOS Mori on behalf of all the UK’s funding councils and other bodies, interviewing around 312,000 final year students in Wales, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
