INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION: Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics & Medicine

As part of Aberystwyth University’s 2014 celebrations of International Women’s Day (IWD), the Athena Swan Team is launching an exciting photography competition to win a £25 Amazon voucher for the most inspiring and evocative image related to the broad theme of ‘Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics & Medicine (STEMM)’. The competition is open to all staff and students at Aberystwyth University.

Athena Swan Professor Kate Bullen commented “Athena SWAN focuses on the career progression women in STEMM, and this photography competition is a great opportunity to explore and highlight new ways of portraying of women in these subjects”. Dr Rachel Horsley & Dr Pip Nicholas Athena Swan Research Diversity Secondees add: “Aberystwyth is committed to supporting equality of opportunity for all; a key aspect of this commitment is demonstrated by the applications we are making for Athena Swan bronze awards for gender equality in STEMM. In addition, the Athena Swan team will be undertaking large-scale online survey study of women and men in STEMM subjects in the very near future to investigate the career progression experiences of students, academics, research staff, technical staff and administrators at all career stages. Your participation in this survey is really important, so we can identify ways that AU can support all individuals in achieving their career aspirations – look out for the email invitation at the end of January. We’ll also be conducting some focus groups (initially with just women) to explore barriers to and facilitators of applications for promotion. Both of these studies will be crucial in driving forward positive change for all those in STEMM at Aberystwyth University.” Additional information on Athena SWAN awards can be found on the Equality Challenge Unit website: http://www.athenaswan.org.uk/.
