Centre for International Development Research at Aberystwyth (CIDRA)

The Centre for International Development Research at Aberystwyth (CIDRA) supports cutting-edge research to improve the lives of people in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs).

We support Aberystwyth University researchers, and their partners in LMICs, to develop new solutions for global health, secure and resilient food systems, environmental protection, peace and security, and other global challenges.

33 research projects have been supported by CIDRA. Click on the pins on the map (below) to find out more about each project, and please feel free to contact the Principal Investigators for more information.

Four CIDRA projects have prepared short videos to tell us more about their research (below):

Funding Opportunities

ALL FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES ARE CURRENTLY CLOSED.

Research staff will be informed via the Research Newsletter if these funding opportunities re-open.

Details of previous Funding Schemes

AU researchers were welcome to apply for six internal funding schemes, each of which was designed to encourage research that improved the lives of the poor in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs). All funding applications had to demonstrate how they met Official Development Assistance (ODA) criteria. This included the potential for significant and sustainable impact in addressing a development challenge faced by a country or countries on the OECD DAC List of ODA Recipients. All projects had to focus on one of the GCRF Challenge Areas. The Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) provided more information about the funding application process.

Networking Grant:  This grant supported the establishment of research networks that would explore a collaborative theme or project. Please see the application form for further information.

Seed Grant:  This grant supported the development of novel ideas that required testing, pilot data or other development through research in order to reach their potential for external funding. Please see the application form for further information.

Impact Development Grant:  This grant sought to increase the impact of ODA-compliant research projects, or to gather evidence of impact. Please see the application form for further information. See Investing in Impact for other impact-related funding opportunities open to AU academic staff in all research areas (including ODA research).

Follow-On Funding:  This grant provided supplementary or follow-on funding to current or recently concluded research projects, such as CIDRA projects or externally funded GCRF or Newton Fund projects. Please see the application form for further information.

Agility Grant:  This grant supported researchers who needed small sums of funding at short notice, in order to enable networking, research activities, or activities to further the impact of research. Please see the application form for further information.

Emergency Response Grant:  This grant aimed to develop capacity at AU to respond rapidly to emergencies in LMICs that urgently required research. Please see the application form  for further information.

Institutional Partnerships

Aberystwyth University is seeking to establish a small number of long-term institutional research partnerships in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs). One of these partnerships is with the University of Namibia (UNAM). This has resulted in bilateral research visits and four ongoing pilot projects to promote secure and resilient food systems, veterinary health, and protection of marine resources. Further information about the projects is available on the map at the top of the page.
