Supporters and Parents

For students leaving home for the first time, the move to university marks a new and exciting period of their life. They will be moving away from home to a new environment where they will learn not only about their chosen subject of study, but about themselves, their potential and their personal aspirations.

For anyone supporting a new student, this time can involve a transition in the relationship that you have with them. It can be a challenging experience as your student becomes increasingly independent and less reliant on you. It is important during this transitional period to allow them to make their own way in the world. Being there as a support during the times that they do need you is essential, as is allowing them to set their own limitations on your new relationship.

This section of our site is intended to help parents and supporters during that transition. Further information can be found in the University’s Parents Guide 2018, on the Parents and Guardians page, and in our FAQs.
