Partner Profile: ADA University

Aberystwyth University students have the opportunity to study on a direct exchange at ADA University located in Baku, Azerbaijan

Type of link: Partnered with the Aberystwyth Business School

Established: 2006

The ADA University is located in the country’s capital city of Baku and was founded only recently in 2006. Before it became a university, the original objective of the Academy was to train specialists for a diplomatic career in Azerbaijani foreign affairs. Azerbaijan itself borders Turkey, Armenia and Geogria with northeast half of the country situated in Europe and the southwest half in Asia. Located on the southern shore of the Absheron peninsula, Baku has many cultural assets including museums, theatres, concert halls and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. ADA is located in the city itself and opened a new green downtown campus in 2012.

The city of Baku is full of culture and little unexpected finds such as Little Venice, a boulevard made to look like the Italian city complete with gondola taxis. Other notable attractions include the arm-wrestling federation and the Naftalan spa where you can bathe in crude oil.

Courses available

Courses are offered in English. As ADA University is partnered with The Aberystwyth Business School only students from this department can apply. ADA University has a number of academic departments that are similar to those at Aberystwyth; joint honours students may be able to take courses from these departments at the discretion of their exchanges coordinator.

Aberystwyth students must take courses which fall under the ADA School of Business and are encouraged to discuss the courses offered with their cooridnator so that they can make the most appropriate choices.

Baku has a range of accommodation options available for short-term and long-term stay. ADA University offers “Tabriz Evleri” apartments to international students for duration of their studies.

Visa Information and Other Costs

Students are required to apply for a single entry visa at their closest Azerbaijani embassy. This visa is valid for 30 days so students will have to apply for a temporary residence once they arrive in Azerbaijan which will allow them to travel outside of Azerbaijan. Details of this process can be found on the ADA website

Students are urged to take out health insurance for the duration of the trip as an illness or accident may not be covered by either university's policy.

Getting There‌

The closest airport to ADA is Baku Heydar Aliyev International Airport and flight times from London are around 5 hours. The university does not provide transfers from the airport but there are a number of ways that students can make the journey.‌

How to Apply

All students wishing to go on an exchange to ADA must apply through Aberystwyth University as they must first be nominated by the international office and students usually go in the second semester of their second year unless they have special permission from their department. After being nominated, students must complete an application form.
