Dalhousie University is located in Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia. With a multicultural population of nearly 400,000 the town provides a friendly environment and is a major economic and cultural centre for eastern Canada. Many people flock there for the quality of life it has to offer. Situated on the coast, it boasts stunning harbor views, heritage buildings, cosmopolitan eateries and arty shops. As a university town, it has a great nightlife, with many bars and nightclubs. Halifax has the world’s longest harbor front boardwalk and the ocean plays a big part in the lives of many Haligonians with sailing, water sports and surfing being popular all year round.

The university has three campuses, two located in Halifax itself, only a five minute walk from the ocean and an agricultural campus located in Truro, approximately one hour from Halifax.


All courses are offered in English. Students from any academic department are eligible to apply at the discretion of their Department’s Exchange Co-Ordinator. Dalhousie has a number of academic departments that are similar to those at Aberystwyth. These include:


Accommodation on campus is NOT available for Aberystwyth students studying at Dalhousie during the fall semester only. For this period students will have to find their own housing. There is the possibility of accommodation for students studying for just the winter term or the full academic year but spots are limited so students must apply as soon as possible.

Visa Information and Other Costs

Depending on the duration of the exchange, some students may not need a visa or study permit to attend Dalhousie. However students must check if they will need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to enter Canada. This currently costs $7 CAD. If you do need a study permit then according to the Canadian government's website 'Your eTA or visa will be issued to you at the same time as your study permit. You do not need to apply separately or to pay an additional fee.'

ALL students attending Dalhousie MUST participate in the University's health insurance and dental plans for the duration of their stay. Students are automatically enrolled in the these plans and do not need to complete application forms. Without the appropriate health insurance, students will not be eligible for a visa.

Getting There‌

The closest international airport to University of Dalhousie is Halifax Stanfield Airport. Direct flight are available from Heathrow and take around 6h30. There are a number of options for airport transfers. There is a shuttle bus service which costs around $22 dollars each way but students can also arrange a taxi or take the bus.

How to Apply

All students wishing to go on an exchange to Dalhousie must apply through Aberystwyth University as they must first be nominated by the international office and students usually go in the second semester of their second year unless they have special permission from their department.
