Washington State University is in north west USA in the state of Washington. It is located in the city of Pullman which is 324 miles from the State capital of Olympia and it has over 45,000 residents. It is in close proximity to ample outdoor recreation such as skiing (snow and water), hiking, camping and rafting. There are a variety of places to go for entertainment, arts and culture including an unmissable ice-cream parlour on the University campus and even a bear centre.

Just as with Aberystwyth, WSU students make up around 65% of Pullman's residents so this really is a very lively place to live with lots of activitites arrange by and for students year round. The town is so student orientated that all WSU students can use its public transport system for free, making is super simple to explore every corner of Pullman.

There are a range of accommodation options available. Residence halls are based across campus where about 5,200 students live in 18 residence halls. There are also university approved townhouses and apartments available off campus which are just a 20 minute walk away. Housing is limited so students must make sure they apply in advance of their arrival.

Visa Information and Other Costs

All international and exchange students must apply for a J-1 visa as well as an I-901 SEVIS to study in the US. Both of these documents have fees attached which are liable to change year on year. 

ALL students attending Washington State University MUST have health insurance and be able to prove that they have purchased it. Unless the student arranges an alternaive, health insurance is provided automatically by WSU and billed to the student. Without the appropriate health insurance, students will not be eligible for a visa.

Getting There

The closest airport to Washington State University is Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport which is around 2 miles from campus. The university does offer a pick-up service which students will have to book in advance. Alternatively, students can choose to take a taxi or bus to their residence.

The first semester begins in August and ends in December. International students are expected to arrive a few days in advance of term dates. The second semester begins in January and ends in May.

How to Apply

All students wishing to go on an exchange to Washington State University must apply through Aberystwyth University as they must first be nominated by the international office and students usually go in the second semester of their second year unless they have special permission from their department.
