Willamette University is in north west USA in the state of Oregon. It is located in Salem, which is the state capital with over 150,000 residents. Willamette University enjoys all the benefits of the Pacific Northwest: forests, rivers, mountains and the coastline are nearby and it is next to downtown Salem, which offers numerous restaurants, coffeehouses, festivals, concerts, a shopping mall and other activities. With such a vivid history of witchcraft, Salem has plenty to offer museum and tour-wise- you certainly won’t be bored.


All courses are offered in English. Students from any academic department are eligible to apply at the discretion of their Department’s Exchange Co-Ordinator. Willamette University a has a number of academic departments that are similar to those at Aberystwyth; students are advised to discuss the suitability of WU for their degree with their Departmental Exchanges Co-Ordinator. There are a range of accommodation options available; students may even opt to live in alcohol/tobacco free halls. Single occupancy rooms are given out on a first come first served bases. The rates vary for each type of accommodation. Students must in advance of their arrival.

Visa Information and Other Costs

All international and exchange students must apply for a J-1 visa as well as an I-901 SEVIS to study in the US. Both of these documents have fees attached which are liable to change year on year. 

ALL students attending Willamette University MUST have health insurance and be able to prove that they have purchased it. Unless the student arranges an alternaive, health insurance is provided automatically by WU and billed to the student. Without the appropriate health insurance, students will not be eligible for a visa.

Another cost to be aware of is a $150 student fee charge. This covers any administration costs associated with you application. 

Getting There

The university offers a pick-up service  from Portland, Oregon airport (PDX) on specific days which will students will be made aware of after they have been nominated. Alternatively, students can choose to take a taxi or bus to their residence.

The first semester begins in August and ends in December. International students are expected to arrive a few days in advance of term dates. The second semester begins in January and ends in May.

How to Apply

All students wishing to go on an exchange to Willamette University must apply through Aberystwyth University as they must first be nominated by the international office and students usually go in the second semester of their second year unless they have special permission from their department. Applications are made and submitted online.
