The Aber Staff LGBTA Network

rainbow flagWho we are:

Aberystwyth has long been a queer-friendly town. According to Niall Griffith's Real Aberystwyth (Seren, 2008), Aberystwyth is the 'unofficial gay capital of Wales!'

The Aber Staff LGBT Network was set up in 2010. It's open to anyone who works at the university (in any capacity), and any postgraduates who identify as lesbian, gay, bi, trans, queer or questioning, plus friends and allies of our community.

What we do:

The Aber Staff LGBT Network was set up to allow LGBT staff to socialise, network, explore relevant professional issues and areas, and enjoy events such as film showings and reading groups. Anyone is welcome to become involved in the social life, the running of the group or to attend the meetings which are held once a month. For more details on the staff LGBT network, please contact the current network coordinator, Dylan Jones - dej20@aber.ac.uk

  • We aim to be involved in at least two LGBT themed events each year, and aim to intersect with other groups, like the Students LGBT network PRIDE, and the Staff BME Network. We would also like to collaborate with other LGBT Networks from other organisations.
  • We are here to offer confidential support to all employees on LGBT issues including signposting and supporting employees to report homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying and harassment.
  • We are happy to be consulted with on improving policies and procedures and broader work within the University.
  • We will work at developing training and guidance for all colleagues at AU

The LGBT Network is open to all employees and inclusive of LGBT people with multiple identities. We are currently hoping to connect with more bi and trans representatives. If anyone would like to speak some more about this then please contact Dylan Jones dej20@aber.ac.uk the LGBT Network Coordinator.

We are always looking for new members and voluntary coordinators to give a small amount of time to help in managing the Network, and at events.

How the University Supports Us:

The University assists and facilitates the Network and is a Stonewall Champion, taking part in the annual Stonewall Workplace Index (thereby monitoring work carried out, changes and progress made). All staff and students are protected by the University's harassment and Dignity and Respect At Work policies.

All staff are trained in LGBT issues as part of the compulsory Diversity in the Workplace training.

HR and the Equality Team are able to support anyone with issues arising from sexual orientation or gender diversity issues.
