NUS Campaigns

As part of a joint venture between Aberystwyth University Sustainability team and the NUS (special mention to our project co-ordinator Odette!), campaigns engaging students and tackling environmental issues are occurring throughout the year. These initiatives will not only make measurable differences to institutions, students and the environment, but also save the University and Students’ Unions money, make students more employable, and engage more students with the environment. The NUS campaigns will help to make higher education more sustainable, as well as helping students to take the lead in promoting innovative environmental solutions across all of society. The annual 12 month project puts students in Wales at the heart of the sustainability agenda through the following campaigns:

Green Impact‌

Green Impact is an environmental accreditation and awards scheme, that engages staff and students together with their wider communities to enable and showcase positive changes in environmental practice. The scheme started in 2013 in Aberystwyth and has been successful in putting environmental change in the hands of teams of students and staff. The scheme has just been launched this year and we're hoping for more teams and even more improvements in sustainable behaviour! Log in or sign up to this year's Green Impact now!

Student Switch Off

Student Switch Off is a campaign that encourages student action on climate change. It does this through a series of fun, engaging energy saving competitions in halls of residence across the university. Students have the ability to learn about environmental issues, sustainability, what they can do to combat these issues, and they also get some great prizes! Aberystwyth Student Switch Off is on Facebook! The campaign is well underway this year with students taking pictures of themselves implementing energy saving behaviours, enrolling themselves into student leadership training schemes, and visiting halls of residence to spread the word!

Blackout brings staff and students together to turn off all non-essential office equipment over the weekend. Championed by NUS Wales, Blackout is the UK’s biggest switch-off event. We're aiming to be much bigger and better for this year's Blackout, saving loads of energy and reducing green house gas emissions! Check out how Blackout went this year (And how it went last academic year)!
