English Language Requirements

As the majority of our undergraduate degree courses are taught in English, you will need to demonstrate you meet the University’s standard language requirements.

Exemptions: as determined by the Home Office, nationals from the following countries outside of the UK/EEA are not normally required to provide formal evidence of English language proficiency: Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, New Zealand, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, USA.

Below are examples of Proficiency Tests that are acceptable:

IELTS:

Science CoursesArts & Social Science Courses

6.5 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each component.

Computer Science (BSc) courses require 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each component.

6.5 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each component.

Courses within the School of Management & Business require 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each component.

Cambridge:

Science CoursesArts & Social Science Courses

B2 First, C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency.

Minimum score of 175 on the Cambridge English Scale, to include 165 in each skill.

TOEFL (iBT):

88 overall to include: Listening (21), Writing (21), Reading (22), Speaking (23).

English Qualifications:

  • A-Level English (GCE): English Language, Grade C
  • GCSE: English Language, Grade C
  • IGCSE: English as a First Language, Grade C
  • International Baccalaureate (IB): English B, Grade 5 (Standard Level) or Grade 4 (Higher Level)

 

In addition to the English language tests and qualifications detailed above, there are a range of Country-Specific Qualifications that are acceptable.

An alternative way of meeting our English language requirements, the International English Centre offers an International Foundation Certificate and pre-sessional courses, successful completion of which offer progression to undergraduate degree courses at Aberystwyth University.
