To introduce the fuhdamental concepts and tools of analysis of Organisatinal Behaviour. To underpin the multiplicity of factors that influence behaviour and performance of people as members of work organisations. To elaborate the role of management as an integrating activity and as crucial for organisational effectiveness. To provide a foundation for the Human Resource Management module MBM7010 in Semester 2.
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
a) understand and explain what is meant by motivation in an organisational context;
b) discuss some of the defects of motivation theories and say why they are important;
c) understand why people need to join groups;
d) be aware of reasons why organisations have introduced teamworking;
e) be aware of the role required in teams;
f) explain significant aspects of group behaviour and how it connects with team working;
g) understand what leadership is and be able to contrast it with management;
h) evaluate sources of leadership power;
i) be informed about theories that attempt to explain leadership;
j) distinguish between unitarist and pluralist perspectives in organisations;
k) define power in and around organisations and understand why groups in organisations may have different interests;
l) carry out organisational analysis using the 'structure and system' metaphors and explain how an organisation's environment may
influence internal functions.
