Aims of the module
To develop an understanding of the principles of animal nutrition and feed evaluation together with their application in practice.
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
i) Analyse common feeds
ii) Interpret the results of feed analysis
iii) Formulate rations for ruminant livestock and equines
iv) Describe feeding standards used in animal nutrition
Syllabus / Curriculum design
The lecture course involves a study of the present and previous feeding standards used in animal nutrition; ration formulation, analytical techniques for feed evaluation.
The farm visits and practical classes involve identification of various feed ingredients; development of sampling and sample preparatory skills; determination of the chemical composition of feedstuffs, identification of the factors affecting the accuracy of feed analyses and practical ration formulation.
