The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries witnessed Spain's political and artistic greatness, not least in relation to the development of the novel and the theatre. This module examines the emergence of the picaresque novel and the short story; it also focuses on two major plays in order to show how Spanish drama broke the classical mould, paralleling in many respects its Elizabethan counterpart.
